Researchers from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology have developed a groundbreaking solar device that could revolutionize water collection in areas suffering from severe shortages. How does this innovative tool work? The key lies in the most sustainable energy source available. The device features a structure made up of vertical microchannels filled with a saline solution, which interacts with the water molecules in the air.
The water production process consists of four key stages. First, the device captures water from the air, utilizing a structure at its base that collects humidity. Next, the collected water is heated by the sun, causing it to evaporate and transform into steam inside an airtight chamber at the top of the device.
In the third stage, the steam condenses on the inner surface of the chamber, converting back into potable liquid water. Finally, the water is collected and made available for human consumption.
