Why Do Deep Sea Creatures Evolve Into Giants?

The deep sea is an immense, dark, and almost freezing environment, filled with gigantic creatures. As we descend, we first pass through the Epipelagic Zone, where nearly all marine life thrives due to sunlight's energy. In this zone, animals are colorful and abundant. Next comes the Mesopelagic Zone, also called the ocean's twilight zone, where light dims and photosynthesis becomes impossible. Beyond 1000 meters, all sunlight vanishes, leading us into the Midnight Zone, or Bathypelagic Zone, where the only light comes from bioluminescent creatures like squid and anglerfish. In these depths, the pressure is enormous, and the temperatures are frigid.

Deeper still is the Abyssopelagic Zone, which reaches depths of up to 6,000 meters and is subject to pressures 600 times greater than on land. This abyssal region is Earth's largest ecosystem, covering around 60% of the planet's surface. However, even deeper lies the Hadopelagic Zone, the ocean's deepest part, stretching from 6,000 to 11,000 meters, found in narrow, V-shaped trenches like the Mariana Trench. Despite the extreme environment, life thrives here, with bizarre and often enormous creatures like the giant Japanese spider crab, giant squid, and Greenland sharks.
